Writing Wednesdays: Bashing the Block #1

I've wanted to do something like a contest, or something of the sort, on the Writing Wednesdays posts.

But I decided that I didn't know how long setting up the contest was going to take, or how I was going to judge it, and I didn't want to put in the time and effort so late in the summer. So instead of doing the contest I decided to give you writing prompts and ideas to keep creativity flowing; hence, Bashing the Block.

Here's how it'll work:

1) I'll give you the prompts/ideas.

2) You write a short story (however long you'd like it to be, just as long as it's under 10,000 words) with whatever prompts you'd like. Mix and match them; do whatever. Just make sure it's clean/appropriate for ages 9+.

3) You submit your short story to me, along with your bio, blog (if you have one), and picture (optional). **Submit it by NEXT TUESDAY (THE 26TH) to randomrantsrcubed(at)gmail(dot)com** You do not have to state which prompt you used.

4) I'll combine all your stories into a collective post and publish them on next Wednesday's post.

5) You can enjoy reading and critiquing other people's submissions; you can see other people read and critique your own; you can meet new bloggers and reacquaint yourselves with old ones. It's a great way to promote visibility and to make "Internet friends."

**I reserve the right to remove anyone's submission.**

**If you have a blog, please don't post the short story on it before the Writing Wednesdays post airs.**

Here are my prompts. Like I said before, you don't need to use all of them, just one of them. Or you can mix and match them; takes pieces of each prompt; it doesn't matter. Just make sure you actually use at least part of one of the following prompts.

First Sentence Prompt: The corpse smelled like peaches.

Get your writing juices flowing by answering the following questions... Who was the corpse? Why does he/she smell like peaches? Is the corpse even a person?

Connect to the Character Prompt: Your cast of characters in the story- a girl who hates bananas; a boy who has a secret (and a bionic arm); a man who carries an oxygen tank around, even though he doesn't need it; and a seemingly normal woman.

Get your writing juices flowing by answering the following questions... Why does the girl hate bananas? What's the boy's secret, and how did he get his bionic arm? Why does the man carry the oxygen tank around? Does the woman have anything to hide? Or is she just a regular person?

A First Scene Prompt: Your first scene opens with a salesman trying to sell your protagonist a Tesla.

Get your writing juices flowing by answering the following questions... Why is the salesman trying to sell your protagonist a Tesla? Why not an Accord or a Camry? Is your protagonist rich, or does he/she just look rich?

Use Your Imagination Prompt: Use the following picture in your story-

Picture from here.

Yeah, it's just a pothole.

Or is it?

Get your writing juices flowing by answering the following questions... Why is your character looking at the pothole? Why is the pothole even there? Did your character create it? Is it a portal to a different dimension, or another world, or is it just a regular ditch? What makes it a point of interest?

Hopefully that helped you Bash your Block. I'll do this every once in a while, just to help those of you out who are struggling. Now go, write, and...SUBMIT!
